As a brand new teenager who wants to start earning their own cash, you might find yourself wondering how to make money as a 13 year old when you’re still at an age where you’re not legally able to get a “real job” yet.

5. Start a blog

Starting a blog can easily be one of the highest paying online jobs, no matter your age. Just asked Tavi Gevinson, who started her Style Rookie blog when she was only 11. By the time she turned 15, she was making millions from it.

It’s also super cheap to start your own site – although you’ll need to ask a parent or guardian to borrow their credit card.

6. Create printables

Printables are a great way to make money, no matter your age, especially as all you really need in order to do this is to know how to use free (yet incredibly powerful) tools like Canva.

And you can sell basically any type of printable that interests you. Printables relating to school are always popular, such as cute homework trackers, schedule templates or even pages for your binder that make taking notes just a little bit more interesting.

You can also look into selling printables on Etsy (or another site, but Etsy is often the easiest) that have nothing to do with school, such as trackers for saving money, seeing how much you spend and budget templates.

It’s worth keeping in mind that you won’t make this kind of money on the day you launch your channel. But if you work at it to build up your audience, you can definitely make money by doing this by getting paid to advertise for companies through promoting their products and services.

11. Online tutoring

Tutoring kids online is another good option for you to make money as a 13 year old, especially if you’re pretty good at certain subjects.

Many parents are happy to have someone a year or so older than their own kids teaching them subjects that their kids may not be doing so well in. After all, you probably did the same subjects yourself in the last couple of years at school.

Most of the websites that list online tutoring jobs won’t let you register as a 13 year old, but you can certainly offer this outside of these kinds of platforms simply by using Skype. 

(I’d recommend you get an adult to help you set it up though, to make sure that it’s legit and that you’re able to get paid for your work, including to help you figure out how much you should charge for tutoring.)

You may not think working on social media is something available to you as a 13 year old, but that couldn’t be further from the truth, as it can actually be a really lucrative online job for teens.

13. Design websites

If you have any sort of coding knowledge, designing websites can be a really good way for teens to make some extra money.

As one idea, you could offer your services doing custom designs. While this does generally take more time, you’re also able to ask for more money when doing custom work.

An alternative, however, is to create templates and make them available on site like Etsy. Website owners can then download these and have their own sites ready to go. This means that you can continue to earn money even as a 13 year old from these downloads – with very minimal ongoing work on your part.

This means that this essentially becomes passive income, making it definitely something you should explore if you have the skills.

14. Sell things you make on Etsy

Etsy isn’t only good for selling digital products, as there are plenty of other physical things to make and sell on there. In fact, given how many people make money on Etsy, there’s almost certainly an opportunity for you to do the same.

And as you’ll see if you search Etsy for about two minutes, you can sell almost anything you can think of, with basically dozens of Etsy shop ideas popping up in no time at all. You could even take advantage of the time you have off from school around the holidays and combine it with the fact that this is often the period when Etsy sales go through the roof. Think of all the Christmas crafts you could sell, for example.

Simply do your research, produce an article and wait to get paid!

Most websites for freelance writers don’t have an age limit, so it generally won’t be an issue if you’re doing this as a 13 year old. 

You could start by taking a look at Helium, which specifically allows writers aged 13 and up. 

16. Review music

As you probably spend a bit of your time listening to music anyway, why not turn it into a way to make money!

Slice the Pie is a website where you can get paid to listen to music and give your comments on various genres of music. Some of them will be normal songs, but you’ll also find yourself reviewing things like advertisements or even just samples of songs.

Your comments will then be used by people like music producers and marketing companies, meaning you’re literally shaping the music industry – and getting paid for it! And how it works is that the more music you review, the higher your own personal rating will be and the more you’ll earn.

The website itself isn’t 100% clear on their minimum age, but other sources online indicate that it’s 13 years old – so you should be good to go.

17. Voiceover artist

Doing voiceover work definitely isn’t limited to adults, as you’ll know from watching literally any cartoon or advertisement that involves a non-adult voice. There are also podcasts or ebooks that need kids’ voices, which is why getting paid to read books aloud is also an option.

In fact, depending on the season, almost any type of food or drink is going to sell well. You could even sell at a local farmers market or something similar and see if you’re able to set up a stall there.

The key here is to find somewhere with a lot of foot traffic, so find somewhere in your local area that’s particularly busy on, say, Saturday or Sunday morning and wait for the cash to roll in.

19. Rent out your stuff

If you’re not keen on selling your stuff but you do have some things you don’t use all the time, why not look into renting them out to make some cash?

It can be particularly lucrative to do this based on any upcoming holidays, like selling chocolates around Valentine’s Day and Easter or candy canes around Christmas.

Flipping items refers to when you sell something for a higher price than what you bought it for, like people who make a ton of money flipping furniture and similar things. However, you can actually start off by getting something for free and then build your way up from there.

That is, plenty of people advertise things to give away on sites like Craigslist. The trick here is to find something being given away that you know you can sell for at least a few dollars. 22. Do chores

This one may not be overly creative, but that’s because it works.

You can generally do this in two ways: either you’ll be paid a lump sum for doing a full list of chores every week or there could be a set price per chore and you’re paid based on how many of them you do.

If you’re negotiating this with your parents, it’s a good idea to focus on those tasks that you know they don’t like doing or don’t have the time to do themselves, like the weekend jobs they always talk about having to do around the house. 23. Babysit your siblings

Essentially, anything of an administrative nature that you’ve heard them complaining takes too much time is something you could easily get paid to do for them as an under the table job.

26. Babysitting

Babysitting kids in your local area has long been a great way for how could a 13 year old make money. In particular, this is one of the best after school jobs for 13 year olds that pay particularly, as the kids you’re babysitting don’t need to be looked after until both you and they finish school.

Word-of-mouth is usually best for things like this, so see if you have any family friends who can spread the word about how great you are at babysitting. 27. Dog walker

People are willing to pay good money to make sure their dogs are looked after, and this includes paying people to walk their dogs when they may not have the time to do it themselves.

And that’s where you come in! By offering your services as an after-school dog walker, you’ll be able to get paid to walk and get paid to hang out with dogs, which is definitely a win-win.

I mentioned online tutoring before, but in-person tutoring is also a good way to make money as a 13 year old.

Parents are often more than willing to pay for their kids to get tutored by a 13 year old, as the kids will presumably be a couple of years younger than you and so are covering coursework that you yourself did pretty recently.

One strategy to get your foot in the door is to tell the teachers at your school that you’re interested in any tutoring work that’s available. They’ll then be able to tell any parents that approach them that you’re available to help improve their kids’ knowledge in that subject.

Only go to people‘s houses to do this if your parent or guardian give their approval. Otherwise, you can usually tutor students at school, either in the school library or an unused classroom.

30. Wash cars

Car washing is one of those tasks that every car owner knows they should be doing but generally doesn’t do enough.

And that’s exactly why you can use this to your advantage. By offering to wash cars, ideally on a regular basis, you’ll be able to get paid to do something that’s not overly difficult to do, but that will be very appreciated by each car owner.

And by setting this up so that you’re washing each car once a week or so, you’ll be able to make sure that you’re getting paid every single week, rather than simply doing this as a one off task.

31. Clean out garages or basements

That is, if you find anything in these rooms that looks like it’s unused but that you think you may be able to resell for some cash, offer to take it off the owner’s hands as an extra boost to your earnings.

Getting paid to work in other people’s yards may be hard work, but it also pays well given that it falls firmly into the category of “things most people don’t want to do themselves”.

You could agree to do a regular task, like mowing your clients’ lawns every Saturday afternoon as a really strategic way to make money as a 13 year old. Alternatively, you can get paid to do one-off projects, like helping people with their landscaping when laying out their new garden or even helping to set stones in a new path or lay new grass.

This is going to be a more viable option if you live somewhere with a lot of houses that have yards compared to somewhere that’s more apartment-heavy. But if you do think it’s a possibility in your area, consider starting with a letterbox drop of flyers setting out your services and your fees.

Helping people to do their painting jobs can make you some serious money, given how long it takes to complete most paint jobs.

Whether it’s someone’s fence, the outside walls of their house or some rooms inside, getting paid to help out with this can be very lucrative. That said, make sure you know how long the job will take though to ensure you’re being paid fairly, especially if it’s expected that the task will take a few days to do.

34. Run errands

Running errands is a bit of a catch all phrase for the fact that you can get paid to do literally anything for other people.

For example, someone who is short on time or physically not able to go themselves may be willing to pay you to pick up the groceries or other things, like dry cleaning. Local businesses can also pay you for doing things like this, such as hand delivering documents.

The best way for you to go here is to charge per errand. That said, if you think that your task is going to take longer than usual or may involve a few trips so that you can carry everything, feel free to ask for more money as it’s probably deserved.

35. Referee/umpire at youth sports games

If you’ve played any local sports teams in the past, a good idea can be to ask at your club as to whether there are any refereeing or umpiring opportunities available.

Youth games are usually held on weekends and always need someone who’s reliably available to referee their matches each week. This is why many clubs are often keen to hire current or former members, as they presumably already know you’re reliable and are keen to pay you for it.

A similar option is to ask if any of the younger teams need an assistant coach. The main coach usually has to be an adult, given that they’re looking after children, but assistant coaching roles don’t necessarily have to go to adults, making it the perfect opportunity for you.

36. Deliver newspapers

Delivering newspapers is an easy before or after school job for 13 year olds that pays, as it basically involves walking or bike riding around your local neighbourhood every morning or afternoon.

It’s particularly good for anyone looking for a reliable way to make money, as you’ll definitely need you to work a few days a week at least. This makes it an excellent chance to earn some regular income.

37. Golf caddy

While golf clubs themselves can’t hire you when you’re 13, individuals can pay you directly to work as a golf caddy for them.

This involves you helping to carry clubs, switch out clubs as the player needs them and also do things like provide water and snacks. It obviously helps if you have some knowledge of golf, although that’s not required.

This is pretty easy work, as long as you’re okay with walking around in the sun. Otherwise, you’re locking yourself into a few hours on the weekend usually, where you’ll get to walk around a beautiful golf course and get paid for it – not terrible.

38. Collect golf balls

Similar to being a caddy, some golf courses will pay people who collect and return their golf balls.

This will also involve quite a bit of walking around golf courses, with the main downside being that you’re not necessarily guaranteed to make any money if you don’t find any golf balls. However, that’s pretty rare given how many shots go wide and players usually can’t be bothered going to fetch their own golf balls that have ended up who-knows-where.

One trick here is to make sure you go golf ball hunting immediately after popular golfing days, such as on Saturday afternoons. That way, you’re giving yourself the best chance possible to find as many golf balls as you can – and to get paid for it.

39. Shoveling snow

Some people hate shovelling snow and other people simply can’t do it because of how hard it is on your back.

Whatever their reason, this presents a great money making opportunity for you, especially if you’re looking to make quick cash for the holidays. By offering to shovel snow and making yourself available as soon as the first flakes start to fall, people will be more than willing to pay for your services.

It’s important here to make sure that you make people aware of what you’re offering just before the first snow falls in your area. If they only hear about you after the snow is falling, someone will probably have gotten in before you and it will be too late.

While raking leaves isn’t quite as backbreaking as shovelling snow, it’s also not the most fun activity in the world.

And similarly, people often need help taking down their decorations at the end of the holiday season. This is why you should also let people know about your services being available on both sides of the holidays, so you can continue to make money both before and after Christmas.

There are plenty of ways for a 13 year old to earn money online, some of which I’ve run through above. Some of the best examples (and most lucrative) are:

• Be a social media assistant
• Do freelance writing
• Complete surveys
• Create and sell items on Etsy
• Review music
• Self-publish a book
• Look for voiceover artist roles

It’s no secret that there’s plenty of extra cash to be made on the internet these days and the same is definitely true when it comes to 13 year olds looking to make money online.

Are there jobs for 13 year olds to make money?

Most “real” jobs, where you’re working for an actual company, aren’t allowed to hire 13 year olds due to labor laws. Exceptions to this include newspaper delivery, the entertainment field or if you’re working for a family business, with some conditions.

There are places that hire at 15 years old, but this is basically the youngest they can go.

And even in the case of jobs for 13 year olds, there are additional restrictions. these mainly relate to the number of hours you can work each day and per week.

Also note that even if you can’t get hired at a “real” job, you shouldn’t see this as a problem! Plenty of the options on this list that we’ve mentioned can actually pay much more than you’d get at something like a retail job, so don’t think that just because they’re not a “real job” at a “real employer” that they’re not worthwhile. 

Just make sure not to sacrifice your studies, as you can generally earn MUCH more from that in the long run!

Can a 13 year old work at Dollar Tree? 

No, 13 year olds cannot work at Dollar Tree. Some Dollar Tree locations only hire employees who are at least 18 years old, although others do allow 16 year olds or even those who are younger to be hired, depending on the state’s labor laws.

Ultimately, this is going to vary depending on where you live. Either way, though, 13 is too young for Dollar Tree to hire.
