Highest paying online jobs if you like to write

It’s probably unsurprising to hear that there are plenty of well paid online jobs for those who like to write. All you need is a computer and an internet connection and you’re good to go.

And these can actually be some of the highest paying online jobs on this entire list if you do it right.

So if you think you have a bit of a gift for words, why not see if some of these work from home jobs could be what you’re looking for.

1. Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing can help you earn some great money. But the best part of it is that once you’ve built it up, it can basically work as passive income for you.

It essentially involves you recommending a product or service. Then, if someone clicks your link and buys or signs up for the item, you’ll earn a small commission.

That said, it’s not simply a question of putting up a post, adding a few links and sitting back to watch the money roll in. There’s a real strategy about it – but when it’s done properly, you can literally earn six-figures purely as passive income.

Which is why it’s always good to learn exactly how to do this from someone with experience in this. Signing up for this free workshop can be a great way to learn the foundations of affiliate marketing – especially given that it’s run by someone who earns over $100,000 per year from doing just that.

2. Blogger

Blogging is no longer someone who treats their website like a personal diary. In fact, a blog is basically any website out there – including this one!

Meaning that if you’ve got something to say on a topic that you think others would be interested in, starting a blog can be a great way to channel that into earning some income.

This can range from a few dollars a month to the earnings of those bloggers who are absolutely crushing it, including those who earn over $1,000,000 per year from their blogs.

Just check out Jon Dykstra’s income reports. As a blogger, he makes over $110,000 every month from his sites (and his Fat Stacks course is amazing at showing you how you could do the same.)

Thinking about starting a blog to make extra money?

Great choice! After all, it’s one of the cheapest online businesses to start at under $3 per month – less than a cup of coffee! In fact, that’s the price you’ll get if you launch your site with Bluehost, which is easily my top pick for the best website host for beginners to use.

Not only will you get a free domain name, but you definitely don’t need any tech experience to get started.

To find out more, check out my simple step-by-step guide on how to start a blog as I show you the exact steps I took to start on the path to earning thousands of dollars every month – on the side of my full-time job!

3. Content writer

There are plenty of high paying online jobs out there for someone who can write great content.

Website owners hire freelance writers all the time to produce articles. You can even get paid for writing things like “About” pages for those who don’t have the time or the creative knack to do it themselves.

You can also be paid on a more one-off basis for writing stories. For example, Listverse pays $100 per article, as long as it’s original content and consists of a list of at least 10 items.

4. Giving opinions

You’ve probably heard of survey sites as a way to make some extra money, but it would be a bit of a stretch to call them “high paying”.

However, there are still online jobs that let you earn serious money from giving your opinion.

Specifically, Respondent is a site where you can give your opinion for different periods of time and get really well paid for it.

For example, at the time of writing this article, there’s an offer where you can earn $125 for one hour of work.

You can also do shorter sessions if you want, including some that let you get paid $40 for giving only 15 minutes of inputs.

Find out more about Respondent.

5. E-book author

If you’ve got a story to tell and a will to write, you could always have your own e-book published through the Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing platform.

You’ll retain up to 70% of the sales in royalties plus you get to set the price of the book.

And from there, whether or not this is one of the highest paying online jobs on this list will depend on you. If you’ve written the next Harry Potter series, it’s clear that this could be extremely lucrative.

6. Grant writer

Any organization that relies on funding from other entities will tell you that writing grant proposals can make or break their budget for the year.

You’ll essentially be saying what the organization plans to do with the funds and why they should be selected to receive them. This sometimes involves complying with pretty stringent requirements, especially if the funds are coming from a government agency.

But it also takes a flair for writing – remember, you’re out to convince someone on the other end why you’re the best and how good your project is, so it’s like writing something like a dry, straightforward contract.

And good skills in this area are in high demand, meaning your fees can also reflect this.

Best online jobs from home if you have good attention to detail

Attention to detail is critical for many jobs, but none more so than the ones in this section.

After all, if you miss something, you could be costing your employer a ton of money.

But if you’re good at what you do and know what to look for, you’re bound to continue to be hired again and again.

Skills like that in these fields are invaluable to those who rely on them, allowing you to easily demand up to a six-figure salary if you decide to move on from considering this as “only” a part time job.

7. Proofreader

Proofreading isn’t quite editing, which involves changing text and moving it around to flow better.

Instead, as a proofreader, you’ll be giving documents one final look over to really add the cherry on top.

It means you’re basically being paid to be the “fresh eyes” to catch anything that’s glaringly wrong or just sounds odd.

And about being paid: proofreaders earn between $25 and $45 per hour, meaning you can earn more than $7,000 per month if you build up your client list to a full time amount.

If this sounds like a good fit for you, Proofread Anywhere offers a completely free online workshop to see how to be an effective proofreader, how to attract clients – and how to really turn this into one of the highest paying online jobs out there.

And given that you can earn between $18 and $45 per hour in this job, you can definitely make some serious money here.

Working full time in this role can nab you around $45,000 per year, meaning it’s definitely one of the work from home jobs on this list that could easily replace your current income.

11. Website tester

Becoming a website tester doesn’t require you to have any sort of technical knowledge. In fact, it’s just the opposite, given that website owners want to use you to see how a “normal person” navigates their site.

And there are plenty of sites out there that pay you to test websites for money.

For example, Respondent is currently looking for website testers to get paid $100 for a 60-minute test.

Other sites also have shorter tests, although these do pay less, so take a look at the various options to see what suits you based on your availability.

12. Medical transcriptionist

Becoming a medical transcriptionist involves transcribing medical reports that have been voice-recorded by doctors, nurses and other healthcare providers.

This means that being quick and accurate is more important than ever in a role like this.

In this role, your responsibilities could include working on paid ads, such as on Facebook, preparing and scheduling posts on platforms like Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest, or responding to comments on a company’s social media pages.

It basically involves making sure a business appears as high as possible in search results when people search for key terms.

There are definitely some tricks of the trade to learn here – check out Moz for some great free guides that I’ve used myself in this area.

woman working from home on her laptop and talking on phone

While you’re not paid unless someone takes the job, which means your rates can fluctuate each month, you can expect to charge 25% or more of the person’s yearly salary. Clearly this can add up to a significant amount.

Best paying online jobs if you’re creative

Much like in the real world, some of the highest paying online jobs out there will be available to you if you have a real creative streak.

And if you combine that with some technical know-how, you’ll be well on your way to securing yourself one of the options on this list.

21. Logo designer

As a logo designer, businesses or individuals will hire you to make something eye-catching and relevant to their brand.

And while graphic design can take some serious skill, you don’t necessarily need that for logo design given how amazing some of the technology is for this purpose.

To see what I mean, check out sites like Canva and PicMonkey which let you make seriously good logos in a matter of minutes.

Of course, if you’re making logos through websites like these rather than using more technical options, you’re going to be able to charge less than a more experienced graphic designer, who can charge up to $100 an hour.

But if you’re in the market to offer more straightforward services, check out Freelancr for the kind of work you could be doing – and rates you could be charging.

22. Website developer

Working as a website developer can involve two options:

  • Selling website templates for people to place on their site
  • Creating custom sites based on your client’s specifications

Both have their pros and cons. In the case of the first one, you can basically make the template and then make it available online for others to buy. This means that, except for the occasional technical tweak, this can be a great source of passive income.

But creating custom sites lets you charge a lot more. In fact, depending on the complexity of the site that your client is looking for, this is easily one of the highest paying online jobs on this list, letting you charge potentially thousands of dollars.

23. Video editor

Video marketing is the new frontier for many businesses. In fact, in recent years, it’s been recognized as an area of online marketing where serious money will be made over the coming years.

24. Creator

You’ve probably spent the occasional Saturday morning wandering through markets in your hometown, checking out the various ways people have channeled their creative energy into making money.

So why not do the same online?

That is, if you’re talented at making basically anything, you can more than likely find things to make and sell online through sites like Etsy.

And it doesn’t even have to involve actually creating items. For example, if you’re good at calligraphy, you can offer your services to write wedding invitations, menus or place cards.

Essentially, if you have an idea and the creative skills to back it up, there’s more than likely someone online who’s willing to pay you for it.

And this is true even if you have an idea but no money to market it.

three people taking a selfie

In fact, it can even be a way for teens to make money online, with some teenagers absolutely crushing it.

27. Voiceover artist

If you have a distinctive voice, working as a voiceover artist may be a job you haven’t considered before – but really should.

So if you’ve got a knack for convincing people to part with their hard earned money, some of these could be just what you’re looking for.

28. Travel agent

A lot of people still aren’t comfortable doing their travel bookings themselves and prefer to talk to a real person to make sure they’re securing the best deals and getting the holiday they had in mind.

This is why many companies are now hiring virtual travel agents. How it works is that potential customers will call and be put through to you at home, where you can help them to create their dream itinerary for the best price possible.

(You could also be dealing with people whose travel plans may have gone awry, so be prepared for that too.)

The average salary range is reported as being between $47,000 and $77,000 so it’s pretty clear how this is one of the highest paying online jobs available.

29. Call center operator

You’ve almost certainly called a business at some point and been put through to a call center, but did you know that you can actually work in that role too?

You could be put in a generic position, like answering any customer queries, or be asked to specialize, such as manning the phones for anyone looking to buy a certain product.

Either way, great customer service skills, a willingness to help and, yes, patience will go a long way in this position.

30. Insurance agent

Working as an insurance agent means you’ll be selling insurance policies to people.

You don’t necessarily have to work for an insurance company to do this. Instead, you can actually start this on your own and work to sell insurers’ policies, with these companies paying you a commission for anyone who purchases a policy.

person with coffee and laptop

This does mean, however, that you’d be competing with larger companies with a much broader reach, so it’s up to you to determine which is the best option for you in terms of generating business.

But given how large the commissions can be, this can definitely be one of the highest paying online jobs.

Best work from home jobs in customer service

As online shopping grows in popularity every day, it’s probably not surprising to hear that more and more customer service jobs are also moving online.

And the fact that there’s always going to be a customer with a question makes these some of the best work from home jobs out there.

31. Amazon FBA

Fulfillment by Amazon, or FBA, refers to the concept of buying products from a supplier and then selling them on Amazon.

In the case of Amazon FBA though, Amazon manages all of the storage and shipping (i.e. the fulfillment). You don’t even have to touch the items as the supplier can ship the goods directly to Amazon.

The benefit of selling in this way is that you’ll have access to Amazon’s massive audience. You’ll also avoid having to do a lot of the administrative and logistics aspects, such as shipping and managing returns.

The biggest downside is Amazon’s fees. They don’t do any of the above stuff for free, so it’s important that you check that the fees they charge make it worthwhile for you to consider this as an online job.

How do I work for Amazon from home?

You can get started with Amazon FBA here.

And if you’re interested in working with Amazon in other roles, they have a ton of jobs at what they call “virtual locations”. These are essentially work from home jobs and include customer service roles, IT positions and more.

Click here to look for one that suits you.

32. Healthcare assistant

Healthcare is a multi-billion dollar industry and there’s a lot of behind the scenes administrative work involved for which you can earn money from home.

This may include tasks like billing, managing insurance claims, coding and providing general assistance to customers.

And with salaries starting at $40,000 per year, there’s definitely room to make money here.

33. Dropshipping

Dropshipping is similar to Amazon FBA, with the biggest difference being that you don’t own any stock in dropshipping. That is, you’re working as the middleman between the supplier and your customers.

With Amazon, on the other hand, you have to buy your own merchandise and then pay for it to be stored in Amazon’s warehouses. They then take care of shipments for you – with their fees reflecting this.

This means that dropshipping may be a better option if you’re just starting out. You get to keep more money and your fees are much more reasonable. Then, if (or when!) you start to get successful, you may wish to switch to Amazon FBA which is easier for scaling up.

You can dropship through a range of different sites, although I’d recommend taking a look at Shopify as a starting point.

34. Flipping or retail arbitrage

Flipping online or retail arbitrage is the 21st century’s answer to finding treasure at flea markets and thrift stores.

That is, you’ll be looking to buy items that you believe you can resell at a higher value later.

The advantage of doing this online compared to the more traditional way of doing it in-person is that you’ll have access to a much wider range of potential customers.

That is, by not limiting yourself to those who can pick up the items you’re selling, you have the chance to make more money if someone on the other side of the country is willing to buy something from you.

The key part to making money here is knowing when you’ve struck gold. That is, not only do you have to know that the item you’re looking at is underpriced, but you have to know where and how you could sell it for more.

This may be a question of knowing that it’s more popular in a certain area or knowing how to do up the item to increase its value.

35. Loan processor

Loan processing involves processing applications submitted by potential borrowers for loans. For example, you may focus on processing mortgages, in which case you’ll look at the applicant’s financial information and assess whether they’d be a good borrower and on what terms.

You’ll also have to keep an eye out for potential fraud as well as compliance with the relevant laws and regulations.

woman using a laptop

In many cases, you’ll be the middleman between the applicant and the lender, meaning that customer service skills are important, as is having an eye for detail.

And given that salaries start at around $40,000 per year, this is definitely a solidly paying online job.

Where else can I find online jobs that pay well?

There are other online jobs that pay well but that don’t fit neatly into one of the categories listed above. So take a look below for some extra ideas.

36. Online juror

As an online juror, you’ll be working with lawyers to prepare for trial by acting as the “pretend jury”.

How it works is that lawyers want to see how their arguments will go in front of actual people, so they can refine their message before actually going to trial. To do this, people are hired as jurors to give feedback on these arguments.

There are several sites that let you do this, with eJury being one of the main ones. And while it can be a bit challenging to get one of these positions, if you do secure one, you’ll earn up to $150 for giving your inputs, depending on how complicated the matter is.

37. Check FlexJobs

There’s almost an infinite number of work from home opportunities out there and some of the highest paying online jobs are so random, we couldn’t possibly list them all here.

This is why checking a site like FlexJobs may help you to discover other online jobs that pay well that you haven’t even thought of yet.

Some of these available at the time of writing this article include:

  • Wine Recommendations Specialist
  • Virtual Events Planner
  • Gaming Writer (i.e. creating stories for video games)

What are the best paying online jobs with no experience?

The vast majority of jobs on this list don’t require any specific experience.

Of course, some experience can help. For example, while you don’t need to have worked as an accountant or in another finance-based role to be an online bookkeeper, it doesn’t hurt.

Similarly, you don’t need to be an award-winning author to be a content writer or to write your own ebook. But having some experience in refining your craft, even if it’s just writing for yourself online, will help to make sure that the work you produce is top level.

This is why this list of the highest paying online jobs is separated into broad categories so you can take a look at positions in the areas in which you’re interested or that you know you’re good at.

After all, many of us look for opportunities to work remotely because we don’t like our current jobs. Which means looking for something that you actually like doing is a great first step for finding online jobs that pay well and that you’ll stick with.

What jobs pay $20 an hour without a degree?

The salaries for each of these jobs can really vary depending on things like:

  • Demand for the job compared to the amount of available positions
  • The level of expertise required to do the job
  • Whether you need formal qualifications.

That said, plenty of these jobs pay at least $20 an hour without a degree. Some examples of this include:

  • A scopist, which pays up to $30 per hour
  • A social media manager, with a starting hourly rate of $20
  • A video editor, with an average rate of around $25 per hour

What jobs make $30 an hour working from home?

A ton of jobs on this list will help you earn at least $30 an hour working from home, if not more. For example:

  • Giving opinions on Respondent can earn you between $40 and $125 for up to an hour’s work
  • As a proofreader, you can earn up to $45 an hour. Proofread Anywhere offers a completely free online workshop to show you how to do this
  • You can make up to $50 an hour as a virtual assistant. Take a look at this list to get an idea of the kind of tasks you could be doing in this role
  • Working as a virtual friend can make you up to $50 an hour. Find out more here

And it’s also worth mentioning that a lot of the other jobs in this article can see you earning much, much more than $30 an hour depending on how well you’re able to scale up your work.

For example, we mentioned the blogger who earns $50,000 a month from affiliate marketing (and her course to show you how to do the same is here).

person using laptop outside

Similarly, dropshipping, creating websites or selling on Etsy can all generate huge amounts of money, depending on the products or services you’re offering, the degree of specialization involved and how much your potential customers are willing to pay.

In all these cases, it will likely take you some time to build your work up to earning the massive incomes that some people get to, which means these may not work for you if you need money desperately.

But if you have the time – and an alternative income source to continue to cover your bills – to really harness some of the highest paying online jobs on this list to your own advantage, you’ll be able to do seriously well out of this.

What are the best online jobs for students?

  • Teaching English – if you’re doing your postgraduates studies so already have a Bachelor’s degree, teaching English could be just what you need. VIPKid is the most well known in this field, not to mention the pay of $22 an hour is crazy good too.
  • Tutor – if you don’t have a degree yet, that doesn’t mean you can’t teach others what you already know. In particular, parents of high school students are often begging for college students to tutor their kids, making this a potentially very lucrative area for you.
  • Transcriptionist – you’re probably already an excellent typist from spending hours typing up your course notes, so you can put these skills to good use by working as a transcriptionist in your spare time.

What is the best work at home job for stay at home parents?

Which online jobs are legit?

All of the online jobs on this list are 100% legit.

We’ve done the research and can definitively confirm that there are tons of actual, legitimate people earning good money from these positions.

That said, it’s always good though to keep a skeptical eye out for any scams, especially in the world of online jobs with so many people out there looking to rip others off. And staying away from illegal side hustles is always a good idea too.

Some rules of thumb to keep in mind include:

  • Don’t pay for a job – You’ll often find ads online asking you to pay a few hundred (or even several thousand) dollars to get “in” on some exclusive money-making opportunity. Safe to say that real jobs don’t charge you to be employed, so stay far away.
  • Don’t sign-up for anything that involves you signing others up to get paid – By this, I don’t mean that you should avoid jobs where you get a commission when someone buys something, like as an insurance agent. But many online jobs are actually multi level marketing schemes in disguise, where the only people who actually profit are those who started the whole scheme in the first place. These are the ones you should avoid, as it’s very, very rare for anyone coming in later to actually make money – not to mention that your friends will hate you once you start trying to sign them up too.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is – You’ve more than likely stumbled across something on the internet that just doesn’t sit right. Well, there’s no such thing as a free lunch in the world of online jobs so if something doesn’t sound right, it’s a good idea to avoid it.

Where can I find legit online jobs?

If you’d like to look further than the links we’ve recommended in this article, just make sure the other options you’re looking at are legit.

It’s a good idea to keep the tips in mind that we just listed for avoiding scams. Otherwise, Facebook groups dedicated to working remotely and Reddit can all be great sources for finding legit online jobs.

As mentioned, we’d start searching at FlexJobs and Freelancr when looking for more general work from home opportunities and then niche down from there to other recommended sites once you figure out the kinds of online jobs you’re looking for.

Do online jobs really pay?

It’s been definitely confirmed that online jobs really pay. Of course, it’s always a good idea to make sure you’re only pursuing legitimate opportunities but the ones that are legit – including all the ones on this list – will actually pay you. And pay well.

How can I make $1,000 a month online?

It’s actually pretty easy for you to make $1,000 a month online. After all, that’s only $250 a week, which is the going rate for only a few hours work for most of the jobs on this list.

For example:

  • You could do just over 11 hours of online English tutoring with VIPKid
  • You could do 5 hours of work as a virtual assistant. That’s literally less than one full work day – click here to find out how
  • You could also chat for 5 hours online as a virtual friend
  • Or even four one-hour sessions of giving your opinion with Respondent

How can I make $50,000 with online jobs from home?

Plenty of the highest paying online jobs have annual salaries of $50,000 or more, meaning that you can easily make $50,000 with online jobs from home.

These include:

  • Working as a transcriptionist will see you earn around $45,000 per year, although specializing in this further, such as becoming a medical transcriptionist or a scopist, will easily see you pass the $50,000 mark
  • Travel agents or insurance agents are generally paid through commissions, which very often exceed $50,000 a year
  • Being a social media manager or website developer gives you skills that are in extremely high demand – for which people will definitely pay more than $50,000 per year
  • And that’s not even to mention the influencers and YouTubers who can make more than that in a month!

How can I get a job online fast?

Much like searching for an in-person job, you’ll have to be committed when looking for a job online fast.

These are often in high demand so it’s important to respond to any opportunities as soon as you see them. The best way to set this up is to:

  • Make sure you’re getting email alerts as soon as something is posted. If you wait until you check the site every few days, you’ll probably miss out on some good chances as others will have gotten there first
  • Have your application ready to go. If you know the kind of online job you want, having a cover letter, your personal details and standard answers to any questions you’re likely to be asked when applying will save you a ton of time when something is posted, which could make the difference between you getting the job or not. You can always tweak your answers to suit the specific question before submitting, which will be infinitely faster than writing each response from scratch.
  • Get someone else to proofread your application. It can be easy to overlook errors when we’ve read the same text 1,000 times. This is why it’s a good idea to get a fresh set of eyes to look over what you’ve written, just in case you’ve missed something glaringly obvious.
  • Check you have the right equipment. You don’t want to be in the position of being offered an online job and then realizing you’re not actually ready for it. That is, in many cases, simply having a computer and an internet connection is enough to do these jobs, but some of them do require you to have a headset or good webcam. So make sure you’re well equipped so you can hit the ground running once the offers roll in.

Final thoughts

Whatever your reason for looking to work from home, there’s no reason why you have to sacrifice your salary for the flexibility of working remotely.

In fact, in many cases, you may find some of these online jobs as being better paid than your current position.

Which is why we’d definitely recommend giving serious consideration to pursuing some of the options on this list. After all, they’re well paid, legit and, in most cases, can get you earning money quickly.
